Moonrise Kingdom

It was my first date, my first ever. I had just learnt to ride my bike, and I decided to take her on it. We went to a place that was a small forest – where do you ever see something like that in the middle of the city now! We sat at a place that was the edge of a small cliff. Behind us the forest, in front of us a railway track, and far ahead of us – the moon. It was so beautifully placed, bang in the middle of a clearing between the trees on the other side of the railway track, full and shining bright. We just sat there, staring at the view, innocent and beautiful. I plucked the courage to plant a quick kiss on her cheek, another first ever, and she responded instantly with a kiss on mine, a first for her too. And then we resumed staring at the moon.

“do you know the story of the bunny on the moon? No? oh, its very interesting, I’ll tell you.. so the story goes that a bunny was once being chased in a forest by a lion. And having nowhere to, the bunny finally reached a well, and looked down below and saw a reflection of the moon. The bunny thought the moon had fallen in the well, and that it could jump in and save itself from the lion. With the lion hot on its tail, that’s exactly what the bunny did. And even today if you look at the moon, you will see the bunny on it. There, can you see it? The 2 ears on the top right portion of the moon – that’s the bunny”

12 years later, she left the world and became the bunny on the moon. I’m left the leo, being reminded of her every time I see the moon.

Happy Ganpati

So Ganpati is new to me – but Ganpati in Bombay is just a whole other thing! Leaves me with a lot of questions.
So here goes:
1)      Why does every locality want to compete as if they are aiming to enter the Limca Book of Records with their Ganpati?
2)      Why do other localities run contests like “Best Ganpati”, “Tallest Ganpati”, “Ganpati with the longest queue outside”?
3)      Why is there always a little kid sitting with the Ganapti when it is being transported on the open vans?
4)      Why are these open vans moving at 10kmph allowed on Bombay roads at 7p.m in the evening of a working day?
5)      Why do some Ganpati’s even resemble film stars?
Having said all of this, it’s at least nice to see kids really enjoying themselves over Ganpati – even the 40 year old ones J
